Having won his way through to the finals by scooping the Regional Winner, Central area, prize for 8-11 year olds in the My Money National Competition for Schools, Year 6 pupil, Alexander Walsh, was crowned champion of his age group at the awards ceremony in London.

The competition, run by the Personal Finance Education Group (PFEG), which was set up by the government to promote children’s understanding of money, required entrants to create a piece of artwork which expresses a response to the question – 2040 vision: what will money look like in the future?

Alexander worked on his 2D and 3D creation, which included a poem and various diagrams, during the Summer term and news of his success has just come through this week.  He had already won a digital camera, a goody bag of art materials and £30 in gift vouchers, as well as a massive £500 in cash for the School for winning the Regional prize, but his latest success gained him a Nintendo 3DS and another £500 for the School.

The School is taking a keen interest in promoting financial awareness amongst younger pupils and is currently undertaking a programme which includes money-based activities with an external financial expert and which supports the work of the PFEG.

Alexander is naturally delighted to have taken such a major prize and was treated to a wonderful weekend away in London.  The Final ceremony was held at the Science Museum and Alexander stayed with his parents at a top hotel. 

Headmaster, Adrian Meadows, was extremely pleased to hear the news: “Alexander did so well just to reach the National final and it is a tremendous achievement for him to have won out of so many competitors.  It is really important that students are in tune with financial matters from an early age and it’s a wonderful that Alexander matched his creative flair to the theme so brilliantly”.
